Matthew Lynch

Matthew Lynch, is the youngest son of Niall Lynch and Aurora Lynch and younger brother to Declan and Ronan Lynch.

Biography[]

Matthew is not actually the biological child of Niall and Aurora, but is instead a dream creation of Ronan's. Ronan created Matthew when he was three. Like his older brothers, Matthew was taught how to box by Niall. Before his father died, Matthew took lessons in multiple instruments. He learned to play the Irish bouzouki, at which he is said to have been reasonably good at. He also learned how to play the organ, which according to Ronan, he was terrible at. He attend Aglionby Academy, where he plays lacrosse.

Matthew gets kidnapped by Joseph Kavinsky and is rescued by Ronan, Blue, and Gansey. Ronan and Declan throw a small going-away party for Matthew because he will be moving to Declan's Washington, D.C. townhouse to hide from the dream dealers coming to investigate Piper Greenmantle and her demon.

While living with Declan in Washington, D.C., Matthew struggles to do well in school because he is being pulled toward nature. Specifically he is being drawn to Great Falls Park and seems transfixed with the water. Declan and Ronan end up revealing the truth that he is a dream creature. Matthew is very upset by this, especially by the fact that his family has been lying to him his whole life.

Personality[]

Matthew is a sweet, sociable, and earnest teenager. Like Aurora, he doesn't have much in the way of personality beyond being cheerful and loving, because as a dream creature, that's how he was created to be. He is just a very nice kid. Adam wonders if Matthew's personality represents what Ronan used to be like or what he wished he was like. Matthew can be naive. He has all of Niall's charm and humor. Like his brothers, he also loves cars. Matthew becomes withdrawn and quiet after finding out that he is one of Ronan's dream creatures and that his family has been lying to him about this his entire life.

Physical Description[]

Matthew has curly blond hair. His round, blue eyes are described as being more innocent-looking than the eyes of his older brothers. He is a "bear of a boy, square and solid and earnest." As a child he was pudgy. Unlike Ronan and Declan, Matthew is often smiling and laughing. He has perfect teeth framed by a dimpled smile.

Relationships[]

Matthew is Ronan's younger brother. Ronan loves Matthew deeply and makes allowances for Matthew that he does not make for anyone else. It is revealed that Matthew was dreamt by Ronan and he searches for ways to keep Matthew animated after Ronan's own eventual death. Matthew is the only person who can get away with calling Ronan "pal."
