A psychic is a person who claims to have an ability to perceive information hidden from the normal senses through extrasensory perception (ESP), or who is said by others to have such abilities. The word "psychic" is also used to describe theatrical performers, such as stage magicians, who use techniques such as prestidigitation, cold reading, and hot reading to produce the appearance of such abilities.
The psychics in The Raven Cycle go to an abandoned church in town on St. Mark's Eve to watch the souls of the soon-to-be-dead as they pass on the dirt track and into the church. They take their names and inform the families so that they can spend their final moments together before they die within the next 12 months. The only people who can see them are psychics/seers. The only reason a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark's Eve is either because he/she is your true love, and/or because you killed them.
A psychic reading is a specific attempt to discern information through the use of heightened perceptive abilities; or natural extensions of the basic human senses of sight, sound, touch, taste and instinct.
Different psychics have different ways of doing their readings; Blue Sargent's family uses Tarot cards and they hold readings by appointment only.
Meanings behind the cards used in the booksEdit
The Page of Cups: Gansey got this card twice during his reading and it is described as Blue's card because it has her energy on it. This card signifies the beginning of a creative project or venture. It is an indication that there is creative energy trying to burst forth from your consciousness. Often, the Page of Cups heralds a message/news from loved ones. You may hear about the birth of a child, an engagement or marriage, pregnancy, a new relationship, etc. Whatever the positive message is, it will be unexpected but welcomed. The girl featured on this card in Maura's deck also looks like Blue.
Two of swords: Adam Parrish got this card during his reading. Two of Swords is a card drawn when someone is having difficulty in the making of a decision or is avoiding making a decision entirely. The blindfolded woman on this card is also an indication that you lack the information you need to make the right decisions at this time. You may be missing something, such as alternative solutions or key pieces of information. Once the person is able to remove their blindfold and see the situation for what it really is, they will be in a much better position to determine their path forward.
Death: Gansey also got this card in his reading. The Death card shows Death himself riding on a white horse, holding a black and white flag. Death is portrayed as a skeleton as the skeletal bones are the part of the body that survives death. The armor he is wearing indicates that he is invincible and unconquerable. The horse that Death rides is white, the colour of purity. Death is therefore the ultimate purifier. All things are reborn fresh, new and pure. All sectors of the human race are represented on the card – men, women and children – showing that Death does not discern between age, race or gender.
Death is symbolic of the ending of a major phase or aspect of your life that may bring about the beginning of something far more valuable and important. You need to put the past behind you and part ways, ready to embrace new opportunities and possibilities. Similarly, Death indicates a time of significant transformation, change and transition. You need to profoundly transform yourself and clear away any of the old in order to bring in the new. Any change at this time should be welcomed as a positive, cleansing, transformative force in your life. Death is an indication that you need to learn to let go of unhealthy attachments in your life to pave the way to a fuller, more fulfilled life of deeper meaning and significance. Death teaches you to let go of outworn and outgrown ways of life and move forward.
The Knight of Pentacles: The Knight of Pentacles works in a very methodical and rigorous manner. Though his visions may not be earth-shattering, and his methods are certainly not original, the Knight of Pentacles sees that everything he undertakes will meet with nothing but success. He has the patience to accomplish all his tasks and he is incredibly reliable due to his sense of responsibility and commitment. As a part of yourself, the Knight of Pentacles suggests that you need to be trustworthy, reliable and a good provider. You need to follow a routine to ensure that an important task or job is completed from start to finish at the standard expected. You are meticulous in your approach and you make sure that everything is planned and executed down to the finest detail to create overall success. You will never leave a job half done. It is essential to you that you complete all assigned tasks and projects to a certain standard and that you follow through on your promises.
The Knight of Pentacles suggests that you are taking a very moderated and conservative approach to life right now, and while you may be feeling that change is imminent, you are sticking to your tried and tested ways of doing things.
