A tarot deck is a pack of playing cards. They were used beginning in the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play games, many of which are still played today. In the late 18th century, some tarot decks began to be used for divination via tarot card reading and cartomancy leading to custom decks developed for such occult purposes.[1]

Description[]

A tarot deck contains seventy-eight cards, each with its own imagery, symbolism and story. The deck has two distinct parts: the Major Arcana (greater secrets), or trump cards, consists of twenty-two cards without suits, and the Minor Arcana (lesser secrets) consists of fifty-six cards divided into four suits of fourteen cards each. Drawing the cards helps the reader access their intuition to see patterns that are usually only clear to the subconscious mind. Each card portrays different trials and tribulations we experience as well as personality characteristics and outcomes for future events. Tarot is commonly used for making choices, manifesting goals, and meditation.

The Raven's Prophecy Tarot Kit[]

In September 2015, The Raven Cycle series author Maggie Stiefvater released The Raven's Prophecy Tarot Kit. The kit includes a set of seventy-eight tarot cards hand-illustrated by Maggie as well as a guide book Illuminating the Prophecy. The deck is inspired by Stiefvater's artist mentors.

Trivia[]

  • The coins suit is also known as pentacles in some decks.[1]
  • The batons suit is also known as wands in some decks.[1]
